What is required for CISSP certification?

Candidates must have at least five years of paid work experience in two or more of the CISSP CBK's eight domains. One year of the required experience can be satisfied by earning a four-year college degree or regional equivalent, or an extra credential from the (ISC)2 recognised list. Only one year of experience will be satisfied with education credit.

By passing the CISSP examination, a candidate who lacks the qualifying experience to become a CISSP can become an Associate of (ISC)2. After that, the Associate of (ISC)2 will have six years to complete the five years of experience required.

Work Experience

Two or more of the eight domains of the (ISC)2 CISSP CBK must be covered by your work experience:

Domain 1. Security and Risk Management

Domain 2. Asset Security
Domain 3. Security Architecture and Engineering
Domain 4. Communication and Network Security
Domain 5. Identity and Access Management (IAM)
Domain 6. Security Assessment and Testing
Domain 7. Security Operations
Domain 8. Software Development Security

Full-Time Experience: Your work experience is calculated on a monthly basis. To earn one month of work experience, you must have worked a minimum of 35 hours per week for four weeks.

Part-Time Experience: Your part-time experience must be for a minimum of 20 hours per week and a maximum of 34 hours per week.

1040 hours of part-time = 6 months of full time experience
2080 hours of part-time = 12 months of full time experience

Internship: Internships, whether paid or unpaid, are accepted. You'll need confirmation of your internship employment on company/organisation letterhead. The document can be on the registrar's stationery if you're interning at a school.
